Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
